If information is only poorly maintained and managed, this can lead to wrong decisions and measures in a company. This is why the so-called information management is of great importance for strategic planning. This covers all strategic processes with which information is used operationally. It includes all processes from planning to distribution of information and engages with its collection, storage, processing and providing as well as the transfer to other applications. The tools and methods used to process these information management tasks are summarized under the term Information Engineering. Sometimes, the boundaries between information management and fields such as controlling, communication management or knowledge management are blurred.
With the so-called MIS – Management Information Systems – all information of a company are collected, managed and processed. Executives can then use the condensed, centralized data to manage and control the company. As a reporting system, MIS serve to optimize business processes and support management in decision-making.
